KLI "Resident Fellowship Program”
The Resident Fellowship Program at the KLI offers individual fellowships for researchers in residence. All projects are initiated by filling out the contact form (see below). Final decisions about acceptance are made by the KLI Board of Directors.
What are we looking for at the KLI?
We are happy to receive applications to our Resident Fellowship Program that fit the mission and vision of the institute.
We privilege projects that are theoretical and reflexive (including conceptual, epistemological, and historical projects) as well as interdisciplinary within the life, cognitive, and sustainability sciences as well as history, philosophy and social studies thereof.
The ideal KLI resident fellow should also have good communication and collaboration capacities as well as the creativity and willingness to contribute to the life of the institute.
What do we offer to our Resident Fellows?
The KLI provides different kinds of Resident Fellowships.
KLI Writing-Up Resident Fellowship for late-stage doctoral students
- Eligibility: advanced doctorate students, who have completed their research and are in the writing-up phase of their doctoral thesis.
- Duration: up to six months; not extendable.
- Remuneration: stipend, travel expenses.
Stipend: The gross stipend is EUR 2,550.- monthly (before tax and social insurance).
KLI Postdoctoral Resident Fellowship
- Eligibility: researchers who obtained their doctoral degree no more than eight years before the start of their fellowship.
- Duration: one year.
- Remuneration: postdoctoral stipend, travel expenses.
- Extension: one additional year, pending review by the KLI Board.
Stipend: The gross stipend is EUR 3,850.- monthly (before tax and social insurance).
KLI Senior Resident Fellowship
- Eligibility: accomplished researchers who obtained their doctoral degree between 8 and 15 years before the start of their fellowship.
- Duration: one year.
- Remuneration: senior stipend, travel expenses.
- Extension: one additional year, pending review by the KLI Board.
Stipend: The gross stipend is EUR 4,200.- monthly (before tax and social insurance).
Hans Przibram Resident Fellowship
- Eligibility: postdoctoral or senior fellows in their second-year extension at the KLI; this fellowship provides an additional third-year extension for exceptionally successful investigators working in EvoDevo research. Applicants external to the KLI cannot apply.
- Duration: one year.
- Remuneration: postdoctoral or senior stipend (see above), travel expenses.
Each resident fellow will have a desk in the beautiful facilities of the KLI. The KLI supports resident Fellows with travel allowance that can be used for trips related to the project of the fellow as well as a library allowance to purchase to order books related to the project that will be kept in the library after their departure. All fellows are invited to participate in the activities of the KLI, such as the KLI Colloquia and the KLI Lab.
How can you apply for a Resident Fellowship at the KLI?
The application process includes the following steps:
- Step 1: Fill out the contact form.
- Step 2: We assess the suitability and quality of your application. If the assessment is positive, we request a more formal application and detailed project description by email.
- Step 3: Your project proposal is sent for external review. If the referees’ assessment is positive, applicants may be invited for an interview to present their past research and planned project at the KLI. In case it is not possible for the applicant to visit, we will arrange an interview by teleconference.
- Step 4: Based on the interview and the written proposal, the KLI Board of Directors will take a final decision to grant or reject your proposal.
KLI Board meetings are scheduled 3–4 times a year. Please allow at least 4–6 months for processing your application.
Rejection decisions by the scientific director and the KLI Board are final. There is no possibility to appeal this decision.
